Repair visit · furnaces and heat pumps

No heat

The house is getting colder, the vents blow cool air, or the system won’t start. Start with four quick checks around the house. If the heat still doesn’t come back, request a visit with your answers already filled in.

Smell gas or hear a CO alarm? Stop here

Get everyone outside, then call 911 or your gas utility’s emergency line from there. None of the checks below apply until responders say the house is safe.

Four checks you can safely make

No tools, no panels off. Select a check to see where it is in a typical house.

Cross-section of a typical house with a heating system The thermostat is on a living-room wall. The breaker panel and the furnace with its filter slot are in the basement. A heat pump sits outside next to the house. Living room Bedroom Basement Thermostat 1 Breakers Switch 2 Furnace Filter 3 Heat pump 4
Schematic, not to scale. Your equipment may be in a closet, attic or garage instead.
  1. Set it to Heat, and at least 3 degrees above the room temperature. If the screen is blank, replace the batteries.

Wait five minutes. Many systems pause before restarting.

  2. Near the furnace there’s usually a switch that looks like a light switch. Make sure it’s on. In the breaker panel, look for a furnace or air handler breaker that has tripped to the middle position.

reset a breaker once. If it trips again, leave it off and request a visit.

  3. Slide out the filter next to the furnace. If it’s gray and caked, a clogged filter may be making the furnace shut itself off to avoid overheating. Swap it if you have a spare of the same size.

  4. Heat pumps only. A light frost that melts off every so often is normal. A unit encased in solid ice, or buried in snow or leaves, isn’t. Clear snow and debris from around it by hand.

don’t chip ice off the coils. Request a visit.

What the technician looks at

If the checks didn’t fix it, here’s what a no-heat visit covers, depending on what heats your house.

Gas furnaceWon’t light, or lights and quits

  • Ignition, flame sensor and gas valve
  • Pressure and limit switches, venting
  • Blower motor and capacitor
  • Control board error codes
  • Heat exchanger condition before restarting

Heat pumpRuns but blows cool, or ices up

  • Defrost cycle and outdoor sensors
  • Refrigerant pressures and visible leaks
  • Reversing valve and outdoor fan
  • Backup (auxiliary) heat strips
  • Thermostat wiring and settings

Before the visit

  • Clear a path to the furnace and the outdoor unit
  • Note any blinking light on the furnace; the pattern is a code
  • Keep pets in another room
  • Space heaters: keep them three feet from anything that can burn, and never run one on an extension cord

How the visit is priced

The visit fee is told to you on the phone when the time is confirmed. After diagnosis you get repair options with prices in writing, and nothing is repaired until you approve one.

Concept scenario No amounts are shown because this business is fictional. A real site would state its own fee and policy here.

Still cold? Request a no-heat visit

The form starts with “No heat” selected. Tell it which checks you’ve already made so the technician doesn’t repeat them.
